Prerequisite:                           Pretech Mathematics or an appropriate score on the placement test.

 

Course Description:   This is an introductory level course designed to review and develop fundamental concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and statistics. Emphasis will be placed on computational skills and applications of rational numbers; problem solving skills with ratios, proportions, and percent; basic principles and application of algebra, geometry, graphing, and statistics; measurement skills in U.S. Customary and Metric Systems; and the use of calculators as a tool.are covered.

 

Textbook:       Basic College Mathematics by Lial, Salzman, Hestwood, and Miller; 8th edition; Addison-Wesley Longman; MyMathLab software.   ISBN: 0321279514

 

Course Competencies:

  1. Apply arithmetic concepts, mathematical symbols, and rational number operations to problem solving situations
  2. Simplify algebraic expressions.
  3. Solve equations and inequalities
  4. Solve applied percent problems.
  5. Apply geometric definitions and formulas to problems.
  6. Use measurement (both US Customary and Metric) concepts to solve problems
  7. Analyze data
  8. Graph equations and inequalities in two variables.
  9. Solve problems involving probabilities

 1.        Each week you are required to complete three lessons.

3.                  The Academic Support Centers offer free tutoring.  If you are a B student and want an A, I recommend the Academic Support Center.  If you are struggling to pass this course, I recommend the Academic Support Center.   The Academic Support Center also offers seminars on how to plan, study and take tests.   The Academic Support Center is located on the Kenosha campus Room A-128, 262-564-2006; on the Racine Campus, in the basement of the Lake Building just to the left of the library entrance, 262-619-6216; and on the Elkhorn campus, Room N211, at 262-741-8020.   Tutoring begins 11 days into the semester.  The Racine Academic Support Center hours are:

The grading scale may be lowered but it will not be raised.

 

 

5.         There are 9 online tests in this class, on trig test and one final.  The online tests are worth 100 points a piece.  The trig test is worth 200 points.  The graphing test is worth 5 points.  Your final grade is based the online tests and the final test.. 

 

6.                  You receive one hour of attendance for contacting me.  You receive 5 hrs of attendance for turning in the first quiz.  After that, each test or quiz is worth 6 hours of attendance.

 

7.         All assignments for this course need to be completed by Friday, Dec 18, 2009 at 6 pm.

 

8.         Instructor Introduction:   Hi.  I am Steve Zambo.  I have taught at Gateway, since the Fall of 1989.  Currently I teach 3 online courses (4 sections) and sometimes I teach Chemistry.    I graduated from Purdue with a B. S. in Chemical Engineering and a M. S. in Math from Marquette University.
