Chemistry Notes
We make words with
letters. We make chemical compounds with
elements.
115 elements and all
compounds are made from them.
These are listed in the front
cover of your textbook.
We look at the following
elements in particular:
Hydrogen H
Helium He
Lithium Li
Berylium Be
Boron B
Carbon C
Nitrogen N
Oxygen O
Fluorine F
Neon Ne
Sodium Na “natrium”
Magnesium Mg
Aluminum Al
Silicon Si
Phosphorous P
Sulfur S
Chlorine Cl
Argon Ar
Potassium K
Calcium Ca
Elements are abbreviated with
1 – 3 letters. The ones we look at are
abbreviated with 1 - 2 letters. The
first letter is always capitalized. The second
letter is never capitalized.

Friday Quiz on
the first 20 elements.
I give you the
symbol, you write out the name.
Chapter 1 Notes
Chemistry is the science of the materials of the
universe and the changes they undergo.
Chemistry began
with the Alchemists. Alchemists focused their attention on
changing base metals into Gold.
It was Robert Boyle, the founder of modern
chemistry, that put chemistry on a scientific footing. He invented the experimental method. In short, the experimental method is a
troubleshooting procedure.
Observation ŕ Hypotheses
ŕ Experiment
(repeat) ŕ Theory
A law explains what will happen. For example the law of gravity. A theory
explains why it happens.
Scientism is
science for the sake of political correctness.
It is not science.
Examples
Global
warming. Fluorocarbons.
If you can prove
with an experiment, it is science.

and section 2.1 in your text book
